Have you ever thought about what it would take to LIVE happily? I’m not saying living in a oversized home with more rooms then you can clean or affording any car your heart desires.
I’m talking living comfortably in a way that allows you to work to LIVE. Not live to work. Everyday, I hear stories of people who are struggling because they live over their means and somehow feel like the more money they make– the happier they will be in their life.
For example; What is the purpose of a car? to get from point A – B– so why do you need to be lavish and buy a car that is half of your mortgage (or MORE?). Regardless of how much your car costs–it does the same as other cars… Gets you to Point A and B.
When I talk about living– I mean it in a way where you create a sense of being comfortable. Maybe you don’t have the nicest car, maybe you don’t wear designer clothing.. maybe you don’t have all the newest gadgets but one thing you do have is the ability to leave a job and not worry about where you will get money to pay your expenses. why? because you have a emergency fund that you built instead of paying too much on a car note.
Instead of the newest iPhone–you are able to work less than 30 hours per week and can go to every after-school activity with your kids. Honestly, that is the way I want to live. 🙂
A lot of this post is sparked from my recent trip to Ireland. Not only is the scenery amazing–we got to know a lot of the people in a small town of Adare, where we were staying. The people there are very friendly and a lot of the locals there are amazing people, who live small and don’t know how to do anything but live below their means.
Work is a side thought, its not able waking up to go to work, its able waking up to go to the bakery to get first pick at the wonderful fresh bread. Dinner is a family affair and most of the businesses close at 5! Even nail salons and hair dressers.. Its SO different then the life we live here in the states.
So how much does it take to live? In California, we have much higher expenses then most of the country. According to Bizjournals the average California income is $61,320–which is about $5000 a month. I feel like that is more than enough to live off of.
I don’t know about you–but I would rather enjoy the life I live vs. the life I WANT to live.
